Saga last week released further images of its 999-berth newbuilding (above) now under construction at Meyer Werft in Papenburg for delivery in 2019. Meanwhile, Carnival Corp & plc has announced that it has ordered two ships in a Shanghai shipyard, with options for an additional four, for its new Carnival China-based brand, with deliveries to commence in 2023. Finally, in Seattle, Holland America Line is this year celebrating seventy years of cruising to Alaska.

Special Cargo-Passenger Sailing By m.v. Widukind From Europe To Australia And New Zealand Via US East Coast And Panama Canal

widukindThe Cruise People is pleased to announce a last-minute sailing by the m.v. Widukind, from Tilbury on May 7, 2017, via Rotterdam, Dunkirk and Le Havre to the US East Coast, the Pacific islands of Tahiti and New Caledonia and on to Australia and New Zealand.

The Widukind offers four single cabins for the 98-day round voyage and also offers one-way voyages between Europe and Australasia.

Tilbury to Sydney is 47 days and the fare is €5,119 (£4,550) per person including full board, port charges, deviation insurance and booking fee. The full round voyage of 98 days comes to  €10,219 (£9,085). And of course there is no single supplement!

Non-US and Canadian citizens will need full US visas for any US calls as cargo ships are not included in the various visa waiver programs (also known as ESTA).

First mooted in the Italian press last October as an order for six 130,000-ton €700 million ships for Norwegian Cruise Line, announcement was made last week for four, with an option for two more, 140,000-ton ships of a slightly larger size and cost. Elsewhere, there has been more news of approved US sailings by mainstream cruise lines to Cuba. viceroy-of-indiaAnd from London comes news of a new 722-foot super yacht to be called Quintessential One. Her traditional lines make her look like a 21st Century version of P&O’s Viceroy of India (left) but with engines aft. This is fitting in a way as the latter ship was largely designed by P&O chairman Lord Inchcape on his private yacht in Monaco

Boom In Expedition Ship Orders – Other Cruise News: A’Rosa Plans New River Ships – Swan Hellenic: Minerva Or Another?

Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has ordered two 16,100-ton 240-berth expedition cruise ships

Over the past year there has been a boom in expedition ship orders, with sixteen vessels now on order and options placed for at least five more. Of these, half a dozen will be Polar Class 6, built for summer/autumn operation in medium first-year ice, which may include old ice inclusions, in Arctic and Antarctic waters. Elsewhere, Rostock-based A’Rosa Cruises may be about to order additional river cruisers, while Swan Hellenic is looking for a replacement ship for the Minerva.

Celebrity Solstice will offer a 7-night Bravo performing arts cruise from Southampton in May 2018

In late January, Cruiseco UK and Choose Your Cruise announced a cruise of the performing arts on board Celebrity Cruises’ chartered “Solstice” class ship Celebrity Silhouette. To be named Bravo, the cruise will sail from Southampton on May 19, 2018. This cruise follows four similar cruises scheduled from Sydney since 2014 in Royal Caribbean’s Radiance of the Seas. Topping the bill of twenty-five acts in the UK next year will be Welsh mezzo-soprano Katherine Jenkins OBE and English tenor Alfie Boe. Elsewhere, Silversea has become one of the first cruise lines to issue bonds, in a $550 million refinancing package. And Toronto-based G Adventures is now set to resurrect Swan Hellenic for a second time, in 2018.
