John Lang, 75, Founder of The Cruise People Ltd, Dies In Toronto

John LangTORONTO, 27th December 2017. John Robert Lang, 75, founder of The Cruise People, Ltd in Toronto and one of the original directors of The Cruise People Ltd in London, died on Wednesday, after a short illness.

John was born in Toronto in July 1942 and after a decade of teaching, and taking groups cruising on Georgian Bay in the summer time, he founded The Cruise People, Ltd, as Canada’s first cruise-only travel agency in 1972.

He was that company’s president for forty-five years and also became a director of The Cruise People Ltd in London, England, when a former client of his opened the UK affiliate in 1992.

During his career, as well as booking thousands of happy people on cruises and being a reliable source for writers and authors, John supported many causes and was a rail fan too. Maritime causes he supported  included the mail ship RMS Segwun on the Muskoka Lakes and repatriating the Canadian Pacific Great Lakes steamship s.s. Keewatin from the US to Georgian Bay in 2012. It was John who supplied the Keewatin with her Canadian Pacific houseflag.

In March 2014, when other people would have been contemplating retiring, John joined Expedia Cruise Ship Centers, where he was able to continue his calling to the cruise industry by doing so from home.

John’s great sense of humour was shown in a post he made just a week before he died, “No Nativity Scene in Ottawa This Year”:-

The Supreme Court has ruled that there cannot be a Nativity Scene on Parliament Hill in Ottawa this Christmas season. This isn’t for any religious reason. They simply have not been able to find three wise men in the Nation’s Capital. A search for a virgin continues. There was no problem, however, finding enough asses to fill the stable.

John is survived by his wife Diana, co-founder of The Cruise People, Ltd, his daughter Fiona, who also worked with the company, and son-in-law Colin.

One Response to John Lang, 75, Founder of The Cruise People Ltd, Dies In Toronto

  1. Paul says:

This is terrible news. It has come as a great shock. John (with Fiona, of course) arranged a wonderful cabin for my wife and I on the Queen Mary 2 for the December crossing from New York to Southampton. I had several long and very entertaining phone conversations with John during the days prior to the booking. We had a good laugh. I promised to buy him a few beers. It’s hard to believe he’s gone. I was looking forward to meeting him in person. My deepest condolences to his family. Very sad.
