Last week, with the backing of new majority owners Royal Caribbean Cruises, Silversea Cruises announced orders for three new ships, two of a new “Evolution” class for its worldwide fleet and one ship for local use in the Galapagos Islands. This week we also have two cruise-related stories coming to you from the realms of rail, with Vancouver’s Rocky Mountaineer and airlines, with Icelandair from Reykjavik.

This year, the Port of Seattle will handle 1,092,345 passengers, compared to 6,615 in 1999, a remarkable turnaround in two decades from no cruise business at all. This week we look at what Seattle does. Elsewhere, Fred. Olsen’s full fleet of four ships assembled in Cadiz last week to celebrate 170 years of passenger service. And it has been announced that the 2,900-berth Celebrity Apex will be christened in April 2020 in her new home port of Southampton.

CMA CGM: Seven Ships – Round The World Via Panama And Singapore – Between US Or Caribbean Ports And Asia – 83 days for €7,700 (≃ US $9,000) pp double or €9,000 (≃ US $10,500) single

CMA CGM has just extended the duration of its PEX 2 and PEX 3 Round-the-World services from 77 days to 83 days. The PEX 2 service features two 8-berth ships, the CMA CGM Jacques Joseph and CMA CGM Lisa Marie via Mexico and the Caribbean and PEX 3, five ships via the US Gulf and Florida, of which the CMA CGM Cendrillon and CMA CGM La Scala are 7-berth ships, the CMA CGM Lamartine and CMA CGM Maupassant are 6-berth ships and the APL Scotland carries one passenger only. Since the Rickmers Round-the-World passenger service ended in 2011, this has been the only service available for a full circumnavigation by cargo ship.

The five-ship PEX 3 service embarks US passengers at Houston, Mobile, New Orleans, Miami and Jacksonville before sailing for Singapore and Hong Kong, then three Chinese calls at Shekou, Ningbo and Shanghai and returning to the US via Pusan.

The two PEX 2 ships pick up passengers in Ensenada and Manzanillo, Mexico, Balboa and Punta Manzanillo, Panama, and Cartagena and Kingston in the Caribbean before sailing to Singapore, Shekou, Hong Kong, Kaohsiung, Ningbo, Shangai, Qingdao and Pusan and crossing the Pacific back to Mexico.  The Mexican Port of Ensenada is close enough to San Diego that it is useful for US passengers.

Fares on both Round-the-World services are €130 per person per day double or €150 per day for a single traveller, with port costs and deviation insurance included. In addition, there is a booking fee of €70 and a management fee of €45 per person. Note: Special reduced fares for the full round voyage are €7,700 per person in double occupancy and €9,000 for a single passenger, about a 28% reduction.

New 96-day Container Ship Voyage: Seattle and Vancouver To China, Korea, Singapore And Dubai

CMA CGM and subsidiary APL have combined the Columbus PNW route and Cimex 1 into a single operation, Cimex 1 Columbus PNW Line. APL has placed six 2012-built 10,600 TEU container ships into the new through service from the Pacifiic Northwest to Dubai, with passenger capacity also offered by three CMA CGM ships.

The Singapore-flag APL Barcelona, APL Dublin, APL Paris, APL Qingdao, APL Southampton and APL Yangshan sail between Seattle and Vancouver in North America and the Chinese ports of Tianjin Xingang, Qingdao and Shanghai plus Pusan, before proceeding to Singapore and Jebel Ali and returning via Yantian, Xiamen, Ningbo, Shanghai and Pusan again before crossing to Seattle and Vancouver. Three more 13,800 TEU ships, the 10-passenger British-flag CMA CGM Aquila, CMA CGM Lyra and the chartered 7-berth CMA CGM Vela, bring the passenger fleet to nine ships.

Sample fares are: full round voyage, 96 days, €13,555 per person double occupancy or €15,475 for sole use of a cabin. Seattle to Tianjin is 25 days at €3,615 per person double or €4,115 single, and Seattle to Singapore is 40 days at €5,715 per person double or €6,515 single. The voyage from Seattle to Dubai is 52 days at €7,395 per person double or €8,435 single, while the quick trip back from Yantian, near Hong Kong, to Seattle is 20 days and €2,915 per person double or €3,315 single.

Not all ships on this route carry passengers but there is a passenger sailing on average every 11 days, with ships leaving Seattle on Sundays and Vancouver on Tuesdays.
