Disney Orders Seventh Ship – Thomson Spirit To Return In 2018 – All Change In The Europe-Australia Cargo-Passenger Trades

This weekend saw the announcement of a seventh ship for Disney Cruise Line, which will serve to expand their potential areas of operation in the world market quite significantly. One of a trio of new 2,500-berth ships to be built by Meyer Werft at Papenburg, all three will be LNG-powered. Elsewhere, Thomson Cruises has announced that it will retain an old favourite, the Thomson Spirit, for one more season in 2018, despite that fact that it is introducing the 1,870-berth TUI Explorer in the same year. And in the Australian cargo-passenger trades, four of the five existing CMA CGM Europe-Australia ships are being transferred to ANL’s Singapore-Australia service. Two German-owned ships will replace the four leaving the Europe-Australia service, meaning a 60% drop in passenger capacity.

In its latest move to greener ships, Royal Caribbean Cruises has confirmed orders for the first two of its new “Icon” ships to be built by Meyer Turku. For delivery in 2022 and 2024, the new ships will fall somewhere between the “Oasis” class and the “Quantum” class ships in size. Disney Cruise Line, meanwhile, has announced new sailings to Quebec and Bermuda, both new destinations for the line. The 1,754-berth Disney Magic will open up both these new routes in the autumn of 2018. And finally, after christening the AmaKristina last week, AmaWaterways has announced that it will build Europe’s largest river cruiser (above), to be called AmaMagna, Regina Magnafor delivery in 2019. The AmaMagna is not the first European cruise ship to carry this name. The last was Chandris Cruises’ Regina Magna (right), which was converted to cruise from Southampton in 1972. Previously she had operated as North German Lloyd’s North Atlantic liner Bremen. In 1988, the Chandris family founded Celebrity Cruises, which is now owned by Royal Caribbean Cruises. The Chandris “X” is still carried by Celebrity ships today.

Norwegian Cruise Line’s new 140,000-ton ram-bowed “Leonardo” class ships will carry 3,300 in lower berths

As we reported in August 2014, 4,000 lower berths seemed to be developing as the new norm for cruise ships. But things have changed once again. With Norwegian’s reveal of its five new “Leonardo” class ships, today’s target size has come down to 3,300 berths, compared to the 4,000 plus of its previous ships. With the exception of Celebrity, whose exisiting “Solstice” class and planned “Edge” class ships are almost the same size, other lines such as Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises are doing much the same. On the management side, it has been announced today that Carnival UK will have a new boss from May, when Josh Weinstein moves from Miami to Southampton as president. In a significant reorganisation, Carnival UK will now report to group chief executive Stein Kruse in Seattle. Finally, Costa Cruises is adding another Spanish base port, in Tarragona.

Today, Cruise & Maritime Voyages announced the acquisition of a new flagship, in P&O Australia’s Pacific Pearl, which had catered to many UK passengers in the past and will be based in Tilbury from next summer. The latest acquisition will be named Columbus, which also happens to be the name of one of the bars on the line’s veteran Marco Polo. Last week, Disney Cruise Line announced that it would be building two more cruise ships at Meyer Werft in Papenburg. And Royal Caribbean International’s Anthem of the Seas, the largest cruise ship operating in winter weather from New York, made another itinerary change last week.

A big change in its 2013 itineraries was announced last week when Disney Cruise Line said it would move its Disney Wonder from her present Los Angeles base at the end of 2012 to Miami, while at the same time dropping Seattle in 2013 in order to return to her original Alaska cruise base at Vancouver. As well, the Disney Magic, which is due to cruise from New York this summer, will return to Europe in 2013, where she will cruise the Mediterranean. Elsewhere, as Royal Caribbean’s Voyager of the Seas prepares to cruise from Shanghai this year, Royal Caribbean continues its involvement as an advisor to China World Cruises. Back in the UK, shipping minister Mike Penning is investigating how weddings at sea could yet be offered on British ships. And the former Russian ship Lyubov Orlova is said to be sold to Caribbean buyers after sixteen months’ detention at St John’s, Newfoundland.
